You MUST Winterize Your Sprinkler System Correctly
I have both valves (at backflow) stuck in 45 degree position. Have tried to turn them, no luck. Any advice?
Hi, when those valves become difficult to move it means they are old or sustained some freezing damage along the way. Be careful here but get a channel lock and see if some light persuasion will move those valves to the closed position. It is common that I need a tool to get a little more leverage to move the valves. With the open channel locks, I straddle both sides of the valve in order to apply even pressure. You should be able to move them. Let me know.
@@CastleRockSprinklerService Thanks for the quick response. I will give it a look.👍
Thanks for the video. I do have a question. If I follow those steps and you run your sprinkler system and no water comes out of any of the sprinkler heads on any zones, What next? Thanks
Then there are many possibilities. First I would check to see that there is water at the back flow device. This is checked by opening on of the test cocks. Water will shoot out the opening of the water is to the back flow. If no water then you have not opened the correct valve to the sprinkler system. If water is at the back flow be sure to confirm that both shut off valves on the back flow are open which generally means the valve handles are running perpendicular with the adjoining pipe. If after those checks and there is no water then I would suggest contacting a professional irrigation company for assistance.
@@CastleRockSprinklerService Thank you for the quick response!
Thank you John. Great, simple presentation. Important, but small, point you made regarding reintroducing water after making the repair. I had completed the repair (which I don't think I needed in retrospect), and after opening the supply valve I still had water leaking from the top of the back flow preventer. Your mention of the need for fairly abrupt water pressure to pressurize and seat the springs inside solved my problem. Per another posters' suggestion to reintroduce water pressure slowly when starting an irrigation system in the spring, to avoid a strong water hammer situation and potential damage to other system parts, I had not been turning the supply on quickly enough to pressurize and set the springs inside. Bottom line, opening it quickly did the trick. Thank you again for your helpful video.
Excellent, nice work getting it going!
Your presentation was excellent. You talked at a medium speed and you voice was clear.
Glad you liked it
In the first step, u shut the two valves before u close the two Inspection ports. What do u do if they are stuck open? What’s the importance of closing them instead of just opening the sprinkler system by opening the valve in the basement all at once? Thanks, this is a great video!!!! :)
Hi Nan. If the two test cocks are open then water will stream out at a high rate. Depending on the configuration of your system the back flow may not seal if you open the water from the shut off valve and let it fill the system. There are work arounds but difficult to communicate it via texting. If the test cocks are indeed frozen open then those must be replaced. Test cocks can be purchased separately.
Thank you for your videos I was able to turn my system on today.
Good for you Deb.
Great job explaining and really appreciated this video for a newbie. Thank you very much
Excellent, I am pleased to know the information was helpful.
What is the bonnet keeps leaking?
If you are asking why is water coming from the top of the backflow then it means the plastic parts in the top have likely been compromised. If this is the case then see the video on replacing those parts, the popit and bonnet
I have a question. How do I find my water turn-on Valve? I don't have a basement. Where could the valve be other than basement?
There are a number of possibilities and some of those are based on where you live. If you are in areas where the temperatures are moderate over the winter than the valve may be located near the street in a box or perhaps down below the frost line accessed with a street key. If you are in rural land it may be near the pressure tank of the well system. Sometime we see them inside a utility room in a closet in a garage. Other times we find the thing in the ceiling in the basement. If you live where you have neighbors you could ask them where their but off is located and you will likely have the same setup. If all else fails see if you can ask the former owner of the home. Good luck and let me know what you find.
Best video I've seen yet. I lost my contractor who took care of us over the past 7 years, so I'm going to try to turn it on this weekend 4/20/24. If I have issues, I'll give you a call, since you are located where I'm located. Thanks again.
Excellent, glad it helped, call if you have questions.
You can see the projector stand at the bottom left of the driveway which contains a short throw projector
Thanks. Metal rods are attached to the letters using zip ties. Those rods are then inserted to a rail which runs inside the gutter. Hard to really describe.
How did you mount the Merry Christmas sign on your roofline? Great job overall!
I like the dance moves from santa and the elves!
Glad you enjoyed the presentation
Very well done! Is that a matrix, p5 panel or what are you using on your garage? You did a great job!
Thanks. All the garage is projection mapping.
@@CastleRockSprinklerServiceIt came out very good! Is it just one projector you are using?
Awesome and easy solution! Thank you!
Looks fantastic.
This is really good! Hoping to make it by for this year’s show in a few nights.
Hi John, come on over the show is all new this season, there are some interesting additionas.
awesome!
So cool!
GREAT video. REALLY helped us to fix our sprinklers. THANK YOU!! :D :D :D :D :D
So glad!
Actually the parts are the same price as a whole new febco PVB! frustrating- also, I tried to save money and bought an aftermarket set and it lasted only 1 month.
Thank you for great directions and demonstration. I am going to give it a try!
This was great. Have you done a winterizing video on the same type of system that you provided for the activation by chance?
Hi Mark, Good to know the information was helpful. A system winterization is not as straight forward as an activation, there are just more nuances to consider. There is a video showing how to protect the system during an unexpected cold snap, but none showing the complete winterization process.
Thanks so much, this was extremely helpful!
Good deal. Thanks for the feedback.
I overthink things, so bear with me. you said schedule 40 / thicker. Isn't sched 80 the thicker version? I saw others not using the top couplers - just slide the right diameter PVC onto the legs and they are stopped by the bend of the metal pipe (so more metal pipe in the PVC / less chance someone accidentally kicks the PVC, the metal leg pops out of the PVC 'cup' / coupler and table falls on that side)? And your thoughts on pros / cons of leaving off the elbows & horizontal pieces on the ground? cons? Less sturdy / stable? pros? lower cost. any others?
I am certain there are other ways to configure a set of extension legs. You sound like an analytical person so you may be on to something.
AHHHHH, 1st thing to do is MAKE SURE THE WATER IS OFF OR THE BALL VALVE BEFORE THE BACK FLOW PREVENTER IS OFF.
ATTABOY!,,,ALL GUNS ARE LOADED UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE!
EmberASSing. there are no washers. Those are o-rings, the white grease only needs to be on the o-ring prior to pushing into position. Because of your years of experience. I'd be willing to betcha' that if you merely removed the original o-rings, grease them, and then reinstalled them....ALL would be fine. Nice sweater, looks very professional. I won't be calling you.
Yes! Don't forget to abruptly turn on the valve to push the spring into place. If you don't it will leak and make you think it needs replacing. However, they do just need replacing sometimes.
Love it! My favorite version of “Little Drummer Boy” Great job with the lights🤗
1:56 You cut down a tree, and then you dress it’s corpse with candles. I LOVE IT!!!!
Very good explanation. I am in that position looking at the ground and asking myself what to do!!!! Thanks a lot!

Hi Keith, how in the world did you find your way to my site anyway. Where is your home?
Thank you I did what to recommend buy the febco Original and worked beautifully easy explanation and got it fixed
Hi John. Thank-you for the excellent video. I replaced the Febco 765-BP bonnet and poppet. I turned the valve back to the open position and it sealed perfectly...for about a minute or two. Then I heard a hissing noise and a fine spray appeared. I shut the valve, removed the bonnet and poppet to inspect the o-rings. No crimps and they were both correctly positioned and lubricated. Re-installed and same result only in a different location around the seal. Tried a third time. This time it doesn't spray but there is a very slight drip. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Hi Sam. Thanks for the kind words. Did you intend to say O ringS? There should only be one O ring on the assembly. The package contains 2 rings: a thick and a thin. Please replace the ring with the same type as was in the assembly you removed. Let me know if this is the issue of if I just misread your reply Ans we will go from there. John
@@CastleRockSprinklerService I should have said O ring. I chose the thicker one since that was what was on the assembly that I removed. The system ran a full cycle this morning and I was hoping the dripping was caused by a pressure imbalance. Nope. It's still dripping. It makes no sense. This should be a simple as changing a light bulb. I'll try it again today. If I still have an issue, I'm thinking about trying plumbers tape.
Hi Sam. Please send a video of the dripping to john@castlerocksprinkler.com. Yes, I agree with you it should seal up and not leak. Perhaps the freezing event distorted the housing but that seems unlikely.
@@CastleRockSprinklerService Hi John. No need, I fixed it! I switched out the thicker O ring for the thinner one. It has a good seal now. Thank-you for your help!
Thanks. These worked out great. Easy pizzy!
Doesn't seem very sturdy.
I broke the bolt by over tightening the bonnet bell cap. I drilled 2 wholes in the cap and threaded string through the holes to get it to stay put, but I saw that the cap should be loose, which it is not with my DIY repair. Does the bell cap really need to be loose?
Hey man. Nice work around to keep the top on the assembly. The cap is really non essential to the function of the device. So as long as the stings don’t obstruct and the thing is not leaking call it good. By the way, I keep an insulted cover over my back flow assembly year around. Sure isn’t required but I like the extra level of protection. Thanks for sharing your experience
Where can I find a cap (umbrella on the very top of system)? I misplaced mine.

I did it! I am so proud of myself. Your directions were so helpful.
Good job Karen. I’m glad you gave it a try and succeeded!
Weak spring causes check to fail
I’ve never seen a weak spring be the cause of a failure. I have seen low water pressure not be able to hold the bonnet and popit closed. A weak spring would allow a low pressure issue to perhaps keep things sealed up.
Great video.. much appreciated! It looks almost like changing a faucet cartridge and I can do that! Haha Cheers!
Both handles to turn off the water flow on mine are in the back instead of the front. Is that uncommon? I don't know why that is. The sprinkler system was installed already when I bought the house. Every DIY video I've seen, they are in the front.
Only on handle is required to turn off the flow. However in your situation I would turn both to the off position. The installer was lazy and did not rotate the ball valves to face forward or it was installed backwards. I’m guessing lazy. Don’t concern yourself with the position as long as the unit works and the handles are not obstructed.
this is amazing! Love this song!!
Thanks. Agree, it is a fun Christmas tune. So we’ll produced and performed. It is a perfect song for this light show.
Thanks for giving me this precious Idea for extended legs of table
Only other thing that may happen is when you turn it on it briefly may purge water until it is pressurized and does not mean it is installed wrong it will seal.
Excellent thank you.
Hi, In March 2021, I turned on the tap (in my basement) for my sprinklers. Before any water comes through any of the sprinklers (auto set the previous year), I saw water shooting out of my outside tap (backyard) so I immediately (within 5-10 mins from the moment I turned on) turned off the tap in my basement and left it at that through the whole season. I did not use the sprinklers for the whole season. Do I still need to do the sprinkler blow-out now (I mean this week, before the snow comes back)? Thank you so much! I am in Denver.
Water entered the back flow device and depending on how the valves were set water may have entered the manifold. These two components should be flushed of any water as freezing can cause significant damage. Yes, winterize the system.
@@CastleRockSprinklerService Thank you so much. I will check out your website.
I don't have irrigation so I've made 3 of those dyi PVC tripods and the head I chose was the MP rotor 3000 and I have been so happy with them my best definition of them, its a "soaker hose sprinkler" . I love how the wind doesn't affect them. What's some of your favorite things you like about them?
Yep, that is a clever work around. You can't go wrong with an MP Rotator, it is our go to nozzle for new installs or renovations. Thanks for your comment and please forgive the late response. Best to you Randy.
Asse stopped issuing you hacks backflow rebuilder certificates, don't touch them anymore.
